On October 22, 2025, the Weixuan Nie Group hosted a special academic seminar, inviting Professor Jia-wei Wang from the School of Chemical Engineering and Technology at Sun Yat-sen University as the distinguished speaker. Professor Wang delivered an insightful lecture titled "Design of Molecular Photocatalytic Systems for CO₂ Reduction."
In his presentation, Professor Wang delved into research strategies for converting the greenhouse gas CO₂ into valuable carbon-based chemicals using molecular (homogeneous) photocatalysis, set against the global backdrop of achieving the "Dual Carbon" goals. He highlighted his team's key approaches, which involve the precise modulation of photosensitizer molecular structures and the ingenious design of strategies for anchoring molecular catalysts onto semiconductor surfaces. These methods are aimed at accelerating interfacial electron transfer rates, thereby overcoming bottlenecks in existing catalytic systems, such as low quantum yields and reliance on complex sacrificial agents and organic solvents.
The research presented by Professor Wang and his team provides novel perspectives for developing efficient and stable technologies for CO₂ resource utilization. His engaging talk sparked keen interest and lively discussion among the attending faculty and students.
